Formlabs Nylon 12 powder is a universal, versatile, and biocompatible material with a high level of detail and dimensional accuracy.

This Nylon 12 SLS powder formulation was specially developed for optimal use in the Formlabs Fuse 1+. It is strong, offers a high level of detail, and is versatile for a wide range of applications. Gray Nylon 12 excels in industrial applications, and its dark color makes contamination less visible.

The Formlabs Nylon SLS catalogue

Formlabs Nylon 12 SLS powder is also available in white, a tough, and a fiberglass reinforced version.

Nylon 12 is also known as polyamide 12 and PA-12. This plastic owes its name to the 12 carbon molecules in its monomer.

Formlabs also offers Nylon 11 for SLS 3D printing, which differs from Nylon 12 in having higher flexibility and impact resistance, but lower temperature resistance.

Bio-compatibility

Formlabs SLS Nylons are suitable for biomedical applications such as orthoses and prostheses, and have been tested according to the following standards:

  • Non-cytotoxic (ISO 10993-5:2009)
  • Non-irritating (ISO 10993-10:2010/(R)2014)
  • Not a sensitizer (ISO 10993-10:2010/(R)2014)
  • Does not cause a fever or systemic toxicity (ISO 10993-11:2017)

It is also possible to vapor smooth 3D printed parts, making them waterproof and even easier to disinfect and clean.

Post-processing

Vapor smoothing

Nylon can be made smooth and waterproof through a chemical process. This works by exposing it to a solvent in a controlled manner to a solvent that melts the outer layer. This process is known as vapor smoothing.

We recommend AMT machines for this purpose. SLS parts are slightly porous due to the production process. This means that water/moisture will penetrate the part, affecting its mechanical properties. By sealing the outer layer using vapor smoothing, this almost completely disappears, making the parts much smoother and more impact-resistant, with a glossy, almost black finish.
